Random Picture of the Week #27: Charleston Lighthouse on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina

This week’s random image is another shot from the Charleston Harbor Tour. This strange looking tower over looking the harbor is actually a modern take on a lighthouse.

Charleston Lighthouse on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina

The Charleston Light on Sullivan’s Island, South Carolina is a modern monolith structure and is the last major lighthouse built by the federal government. When you look at the lighthouse it looks like air traffic control tower and not like the traditional lighthouse that we see along the coast.

The light was designed to withstand winds up to 125 miles per hour with its triangular shape pointed towards the ocean.

On May 29th, 2008, Charleston Lighthouse was transferred from the Coast Guard to National Park Service to protect this historic structure and to prevent commercial development on the site. Although the tower is maintained the park service, the light will be maintained by the coast guard.

About the Image

I took this shot by hand on a rocky boat with my Sony Nex-3N and Sony SEL55210mm 4.5-6.3 OSS Lens, then processed it with Adobe Lightroom to crop, straightened, and remove dust spots from the image. Then I post processed the image with Topaz Labs Clarity to add more texture, remove shadows, boost brightness and contrast. I then used Topaz DeNoise to remove noise from the image.
