Random Image of the Week #46: And the Road Goes On Forever – South Padre Island, Texas

This week’s random image is of the main island road on South Padre Island (HWY P100).

San Dune Covered P100 rd on South Padre, Texas

HWY P100 on South Padre Island, Texas is the main road across the island and is the only road that goes most of the length of the island. As you turn onto HWY P100 from HWY 48 and you reach the island, HWY P100 continues. In stead of dumping drivers off at all the hotels, it continues across the island. The road gives drivers access to the different beach access points on both sides of the island. The farther you drive the more desolate and quiet it gets. When I drove down this road it was the end of season, so it was to quiet. I image this road might actually fill up during the beach season and be a slow drive to across the island.

As I drove down the road, the sand dunes were slowly encroaching on the highway. At some places, its almost across the road.  At the end of the highway, it just ends…You see endless sand dunes and beach.

When I made it to the end of the road, it became more secluded. Not much there to do if you are in a two wheel drive car. If you had an ATV or an off road vehicle, you could follow the trails further out onto the island.

On the way back, you get that feeling this road looks like it goes on forever even though nature is slowly reclaiming the road.

About the Image

The image was shot by hand in the middle of the road on my hands and knees. The shot was taken in the early morning in almost clear skies with my Sony Nex-3N and a Sony SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8. I then edited the image in Adobe Lightroom. Next, I post processed with Topaz Clarity to add texture, brighten, and bring out the details in the image. Then I removed the dust spots. Finally, I used Topaz DeNoise to remove the noise from the image.
