The 2013 North Texas Ice Storm

On December 5th 2013 the temperature started to drop by mid afternoon the temperatures at drop to near freezing through out much of the DFW area. During the afternoon, it rained on and off. By evening, the rain was a light and steady. By early morning, it the temperatures had dropped into the 20s and the rain became freezing rain.

When I got up in the morning, the freezing rain had stopped mostly. But everything was covered with half an inch of ice. Trees, sidewalks, streets, and even the trees.

The ice was so bad, that it snapped branches, brought down trees, and caused power outages. When it was time for me to get ready for work, I went to melt the slab of ice off the car, I ripped the door handle off the car. At that point, I stayed in.

About the Ice Storm Image

Late in the afternoon, I ventured out into the neighborhood with camera to see if there was anything worth shooting. One of first things I noticed was, our trees in the front yard had lost most of its leaves. So the water hung from all the branches and eventually froze.

So I took some test shots and was impressed with the new camera and the kit lens. Then I moved on through the neighborhood. I took some great shots and look forward to sharing some of those over the next weeks.

I took this shot with my Sony Nex-3N with the pancake kit lens, then processed it with Adobe Lightroom and post processed the image with Topaz Labs Clarity to add more texture and contrast. I finished processing the image with some vignetting.
