Building a successful website is something that many people find difficult and elusive, and the idea that it could be boiled down to a set of simple ingredients is one that some might find hard to believe. Strange though it may sound though, it actually is possible to distil the essence of a successful website into a few key things. Here we will look at five essential ingredients for a successful website, so that you can start cooking up your own in no time at all.
A Good Topic
The first decision you’ll make regarding your website is obviously going to be what you want it to be about. This will be your site’s ‘niche’ and the idea is to find a theme that will be popular without having too much competition to face, and to come up with something that you’ll enjoy writing about. If you can give your site an entirely unique USP, then even better. Come up with a concept for your website, and using this you can then go about building the rest of your business plan around it.
A Great Design
Next, your website is going to need a great design to ensure that it looks the part. This is the way visitors will judge their first impression, so make sure you put time and effort into making a site that’s easy to use, and that’s good looking to boot.
Content
This is perhaps the most important part of the equation. People go to websites in order to read content, and that’s where the value will be found in your site. Make sure that you have lots of useful articles, lots of great pictures and in general lots of things that will make visiting your site worthwhile. Oh and this content needs to be updated regularly to keep bringing people back and to woo Google – so ‘time’ is really another of the important ingredients here.
SEO
You can have the best site in the world, but if you don’t promote it then it’s not going to be a hit. Using SEO is a great way to get the word out for your site and it will help people to find it when they’re looking for something similar. Invest the time and/or money necessary here and you will enjoy a good ROI.
Monetization
If you define website success as a website that you’ll be able to live off of, then monetization is of course also very important. Make sure that you design your site in such a way, that the more visitors you get on your pages, the more money you make. This means thinking about where you are going to put your adverts, but also deciding whether advertising really is the best way to earn money through your site – you may be better off selling your own product. Now of course there’s a lot of luck involved here too, and some elements that are hard to quantify. However, these are the ‘essential’ ingredients, and as long as you have them in place, you’ll be giving yourself the best chance of success starting out.
