So when was the last time you checked your privacy settings on Facebook? Over the weekend, I was going through my settings and making some changes to the settings and profile. When I came across my privacy settings, I realized my settings had changed, or somehow I set some features to public. So I spent the next few minutes resetting all my privacy settings and making sure my profile was locked down.
I really do not blame Facebook for this, I should have been checking my settings after each update and feature they add to the network. After all, sometimes they like to set their new features to be public so everyone can see them and try them out.
So How I Do I know I Am Protected?
After all my settings changed, I check my profile and streams and made sure everything was set correctly. Even after checking I was still wondering if I had all my personal information locked down. After doing some research on locking down your Facebook profile and how to test it, I came across a tool by Reclaim Your Privacy that scans your Facebook settings for anything that’s not secure. The tool is a browser booklet that you click on when your on your privacy settings page and in a few minutes it will tell you what’s locked down and what is not.
Once you get the results, go back into your privacy settings, and make those changes if you need to.
The site does mention, that the tool is not 100% compatible with the latest privacy settings. So you will need to check your settings and make sure everything is set the way you need them. I would assume that the Reclaim Your Privacy is working on updating the tool.
Final Thoughts
Even though the tool is not updated yet, it still gives you an idea what is locked down and what is not. After the scan you can check all the other areas that tool did not test and make changes to those settings as needed. This tool has the potential to be helpful for those who use Facebook, hopefully this tool will be updated so it works with the latest privacy setting changes. I will update this article if and when they update the tool.
So is your Facebook account locked down, or you do share your profile with the world?
